Quantum Series™ Engines

When Hensley Aircraft Inc. set out to design a state of the art twin-engine airplane, it did not want to utilize cutting edge technology for every facet and then power it with engines designed in the 1930's.  This was unacceptable.

A truly global aircraft must have the capability to perform in the harshest climates and under the most extreme temperatures.  Air-cooled engines were simply not up to the task.

Our design parameters drove us to a liquid-cooled power plant and electronic ignition was a must.  We found the basis of what we were looking for being manufactured by Firewall Forward Inc.  We gave them a stringent list of specific modifications and components required by our application and, under an exclusive licensing agreement, they now manufacture the finest piston engine in general aviation, bar none.  It is called the Quantum Series™ and it is the heart of this aircraft.

The Quantum Series™ are Honda VTEC based, state of the art, liquid-cooled, fuel injected, inline 4 cylinder engines utilizing a computer controlled dual electronic ignition system.  The propeller speed reduction unit has a 2.4:1 reduction utilizing proven technology and drives a SAE 1 flange at 2500 RPM. See Engine Torque vs. Propeller Chart.  This engine burns 29% less fuel than certified air-cooled engines and at a cruise power setting of 65%, each engine will burn only 6.2 gallons of 87 octane auto fuel an hour.  With liquid cooling, shock cooling problems of the air-cooled engine are completely eliminated and with the computer controlled electronic ignition and a real heater core, the biggest concern for cold weather operations will be to remember your mittens for the preflight.

Next to the unbelievable reliability and smoothness of this engine, perhaps the biggest technological improvement lies in VTEC operation of the engine.  It utilizes a variable valve timing system that provides a much flatter power curve than traditional engines.  What this means to the pilot and passengers is much more power at the lower prop RPM settings than typical air-cooled engines.  See Horsepower Comparison Chart.

Reliability, smoothness, and efficiency are all built into the Quantum Series™ engines.  Every time you fly you will enjoy their benefits.  The real treat, though, is during the maintenance phase when it finally comes time to buy parts.  The Quantum Series™ engines are Honda automobile based, and the price of their parts reflects this.  No more $25 spark plugs or $20,000 overhauls.  Its acquisition cost is priced below comparable air-cooled engines and its operating costs are a small fraction of what it costs to operate an air-cooled engine.  It is simply the best value in aircraft power plants today.

Currently, Hensley Aircraft Inc. is anxiously awaiting the development of the next in line of the Quantum Series™ engines.  It will be the Quantum 165T.  This engine will be turbo charged with a dual fuel delivery system added for additional safety and is slated to put out 160-165 hp.  We expect this to raise performance and efficiency to a whole new level.

Update:  We are happy to announce that the Quantum Series™ engines are now available for outright purchase.  These engines are the perfect choice for RV, Glasair, and Lancair builders!
